Imaginary Cooking: Win A Copper Pan, Chocolate, Books, and Stoneware

Teeny Templeton, the fictional heroine of Gone With a Handsomer Man, grew up with in an all-female household--all of the women used food as a form of comfort. Sometimes...imaginary food.

Teeny's mom "paired" entrees with music and Bible verses.

"Mama was right fond of ZZ Top's 'Poke Chop Sandwhich' paired with Isaiah 65:4, along with a tried-and-true recipe for pan-fried pork cutlets--so moist and butter-like you could cut them with a spoon."

"When Mama fried soft-shell crabs, she paired them with Elvis's 'Softly, As I Leave You," with Psalm 65:10."

How would you pair your favorite recipe with music and quotes/verses/poems?

To enter the contest, leave a comment and add your "pairings." You can enter as many times as you want. Remember, this is imaginary cooking--no mess, no calories, just fun. :-)

The winners will be announced Wednesday, April 20th.

The prizes:

Copper pan

Gone With A Handsomer Man -- Hardback

GWAHM audio book (to-be-released April 27th)

Looking forward to your imaginary pairings!

  1. I would make broiled Maine Lobster with steamed clams served with lots of melted sweet butter with classical music...Soft Classical Music is my favorite. I do not like any words with my music&food! I save all Music with words for driving, where I can SING ALONG at the top of my lungs!
Thank you for the giveaway...You are So Generous.
    Hugs, Donna

  2. Wow, such a great idea and so thought provoking! Being a rock and roll baby, I would have to start with "I found my thrill on blueberry hill" and bake a scrumptious deep dish blueberry pie with crumb topping.

  3. What a fun idea for a contest! I love the song "That's Amore," sung by Dean Martin. I have been known to sing "That's Amore", as I have made and served, homemade pizza. Here are some of the words "In Napoli where love is king, when boy meets girl here's what they say When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie that's amore. When the world seems to shine like you've had to much wine, that' amore. Bells will ring ting-a ling..." It's just a fun silly song. My youngest says I have a song for every word and sometimes tests me by throwing out words. Congrats on your new novel. Joni

  4. Let's see...

    Cherry, Cherry

    Bye Bye American Pie

    Brown Sugar

    Taste of Honey

    Peanut, peanut Butter

Someone left the Cake out in the rain, Mac Arthur Park...

    Ok, that's enough! :)

  5. I guess my pairing would be a tray of burnt cookies with my little Grandloves looking on ~ because I was side tracked by the dog barking at a bug on the sidewalk that I had to go and investigate with them to the tune of, Momma Said There'd Be Days Like This, There'd Be Days Like This Momma Said

  6. A wonderful song for any foodie would be the ebullient song "Food Glorious Food" from the musical Oliver. Great while making sausages with red peppers, onions and mustard.

Here are some of the words " Food glorious food, hot sausage and mustard. While we're in the mood, cold jelly and custard." Part of the ending is as follows: Magical food, wonderful food, marvelous food, fabluous food, beautiful food, GLORIOUS FOOD!"

    Exactly my sentiments! Joni

  7. Another of my favorite, appropriate for any foodie is the song "Suppertime" from "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown." It's an upbeat song that is perfect to sing to your kids right before dinner. Here are some selected verses:

"It's suppertime, yeah, it's suppertime and when suppertime comes can supper be faraway? Bring on the soup dish, bring on the cup, bring out the bacon and fill me up...cause it's supper, super, supper, suppertime."

Another funny line that Snoopy sings: "Bring on the dog food, bring on the bone, bring on the barrel and roll me home, cause it's supper...."

This is such a cute scene and song from the play!

I have been known to sing this to my kids when it's Suppertime! Joni

  8. I would pair a good dish of hot 'n' spicy Mexican food with "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" by Pat Benatar or "There's Gonna be a Heartache (heartburn) Tonight" by the Eagles!

And I'd follow it with a huge slab of deep, rich, chocolaty chocolate cake singing to me "Love Me Tender"!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Louis Jordan's "Is You Is, or Is You Ain't My Baby", followed by Rosemary Clooney's "Come On-a My House" while whipping up some Shrimp & Artichoke Soup and some fresh baked bread...and if I really wanted to hook him, I'd make a Creamy Lemon Icebox Pie to boot : )

  10. Since we are having spaghetti and meat balls tonight I'm singing " On top of Spaghetti." Hope no one sneezes!
    ~ Sarah

  11. I know some REAL oldies (yes much, MUCH older than I am), so I'd pair "Old Buttermilk Skies" with a fresh Buttermilk Pie.

    ReplyDelete
  12. "Ice Scream You Scream We All Scream for Ice Cream" is a silly song to sing when you are making your best homemade vanilla custard ice scream. I believe it was a college fight song recorded in the 20's. I sang this once, when I use to sing in a women's barbershop quarter.

"In the land of ice and snows, up among the Eskimos,
There's a college known as Ogiwawa..."

"I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream?
    Rah, Rah! Rah!
Tuesday,s Mondays, we all scream for sundaes.
    Sis-Boom Bah!
    Boola-boola, sarsaparoolla,
If you got chocolate, we'll take vanoola!
I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!
    Rah! Rah! Rah!

Okay, I know, enough of my silly food songs. Joni

  13. Michael, what a neat idea for a contest! I'd sing and dance around the kitchen to Officer Krupke, from West Side Story! Why?? I have no idea! It just popped into my head! I'd make brownies!

  14. Keeping with the ZZ Top mood, how about She's Got Legs! paired with crispy batter-fried frog legs and the saying "Cold Feet, Warm Heart"?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hands down, my favorite summer meal is Frogmore Stew...started on the coast of South Carolina. You've got to have "shag" music to go along with this meal...Carolina Girls by General Johnson and the Chairmen of the Board. As for a scripture...Proverbs 27:1 (Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.) It is a cross reference to Luke 12:19, which says "...Take life easy; eat, drink, and be merry...this very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?"

  16. Ugh... this reminds me of English class in high school. I always froze when I had to write something creative, and not much has changed since then. I'm just not creative that way.

So, rather than attempt to pair food with a particular song or poem, I'll tell you that I like to decorate wedding cakes in the middle of the night while listening to classical music. Very Martha, if you know what I mean.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Since I am aching for summer to get here all I can think about is Jimmy Buffet's "Margaritaville" and
"Cheesburger in Paradise" !! Can't get here fast enough ....

  18. A Taste of Honey while eating baklava and licking my fingers afterward.
    Who needs words?

  19. Oh fun and interesting challenge! let's see how about making a pitcher of Tequila Sunrise along with some nachos while watching The movie Tequila Sunrise (with Mel Gibson, Kurt Russel) And every now and again shout out at the movie a little Proverbs 31:6-7
“Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.”

    ReplyDelete
  20. Or how about a picnic with fried fish, watermelon and salad while listening to "Black Waters" And quoting: Numbers 11
"We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely, the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic."

  21. I'll pair green bean casserole with Nat King Cole's The Christmas Song because the dish reminds me of the holidays.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I was just in the cupboard making sure I had all the ingredients to make Teeny's peach coffee cake, so I'll pair that with "Brown Sugar" by the Rolling Stones.

    ReplyDelete
  23. What fun! I would pair my usual breakfast of a Balance Complete Shake (I market this product and it's a wonderful Building and Cleansing drink) that I blend with my home canned peaches, yogurt and coconut milk. It fits well with my morning verse of Psalm 95:1-3. I would have to go with Bette Midler singing Wind Beneth My Wings.

    ReplyDelete
  24. As I was getting on with my day I had this brainstorm and just had to come back and share with you. Love my Chicken Fried Steak paired with Psalm 68:1-2 and Earth Wind & Fire's Fire. Made me laugh out loud!

  37. The first thought that comes to my head is one of my favorite quotes: IF THERE AIN'T NO CHOCOLATE IN HEAVEN, I AIN'T GOING....so if I were going to have my last meal tomorrow it would definitely have to include chocolate. I'd have chocolate eclairs for breakfast, chocolate cake for lunch, a chocolate shake for afternoon snack, and a huge bowl of chocolate ice cream for supper. If I gotta overdose, it might as well be on chocolate!
